Ever wonder what a session looks like with a toddler that skipped nap time? I always give my clients a guidebook that details how to best prepare for a session with their favorite Middletown DE Photographer (…ahem… that’s me…). One of my biggest tips is to try to make sure the little one has a good nap before the session, to hopefully avoid crankiness.
Well, as parents know all too well, even the best laid plans get thrown out the window when you live with a toddler! I know I am not the only one who has an 18 month old who thinks HE is the one in charge! Last fall, I had a session with just such a toddler. His parents tried, and tried, and tried to give him a nap, however, naps were not on his list of “Things To Do Today”. Sweet, little, adorable Graham showed up to the session ready to exercise his independence! He was very vocal about the fact that he did not want to be held, and wanted to do his own thing the whole time.
I’m not going to lie. These types of sessions are always a little more difficult. But they happen. All. The. Time. That is just how this age operates. Even if we prepare perfectly, little kids are unpredictable. So we just roll with it. We play. We act ridiculous in hopes of cracking a smile out of said child (and by “we” I really mean “me”. I’m the one that is usually acting like a complete fool! I’ll do just about anything for the sake of a picture!) It is tricky, but I keep a close eye on everything that is going on and I look for precious “in between” shots of the child playing, or the parents interacting with the child. Usually, it works out really well, and I am able to get plenty of beautiful, fun, happy images.
In Graham’s case, you would NEVER know by looking at his gallery that he was having a rough time. When I look at this family’s images, all I see is a happy, adorable (gosh, he is sooooo adorable!) little boy.
It definitely helped that Mom and Dad were able to remain happy and calm and were very playful with their little boy throughout the session. This allowed me to focus on finding the brief moments of happiness and laughter. Together, we were able to create some beautiful images!
If you have been hesitating to get your family portraits done because you are concerned about the unpredictable behavior of young ones, please, give me a call! I have 5 of my own children, so “unpredictable” and I know each other very well! I would love to discuss and plan a customized session to fit your needs! Time does not stand still, and our little ones keep growing! Let’s capture these precious moments while they are still young!

Story of my life! My youngest is never sitting still. We have yet to get a nice family pic with everyone looking at the camera. I am hoping I will get a least one before they go off to college, lol.
Oh, don’t I know the feeling! I was able to get a great picture of my 5 kids at a local park here in Delaware this past fall and it was nothing short of a miracle! My youngest is 1 1/2, and at that age they just seem to have ants in their pants! We put Daddy up to acting like a lunatic and that kept him still with a smile on his face long enough for me to click the shutter button!
I love how well you seem to be able to roll with the chaos! Such a great skill for a Delaware Family Photographer!
Thank you! I have 5 kids of my own, so Chaos is my middle name! Ahhh… toddlers… lol.
Delaware certainly has some gorgeous families to photograph! You do such beautiful work. I love browsing your family photography portfolio!
We sure do! If you are ever visiting The First State, look me up!
Beautiful work! I would have never have guessed young sir was pushing boundaries. Delaware is beyond lucky to have such a talented family photographer.
As usual, a beautiful spread!
I love hearing about your experiences with toddlers! What great skills to have as a family photographer!
Love these family photos. What great memories they have to cherish. I am so excited to tell my sister in Middletown about you.
Truth on so many levels! It is tough to get little independent souls to do what sometimes! When you are good at your job, the family gets an amazing gallery!Looks like Delaware has found the Family Photographer who knows how to get the job done!
Love the variety that you captured in this family session!
What a cute kid and family! If I ever need a family photographer in Delaware, you’re my girl!!
You make such a great point…time doesn’t stand still…waiting for the day when the little ones…can sit perfectly still and pose and you may find they’re already a high school senior!
They grow up too quickly!!!
Beautiful! You would have never have known young sir didn’t take a nap.
