My Favorite Lenses For Pictures of Newborn Babies

I own a variety of lenses, and I utilize them all at different times, depending on the situation and the outcome I hope to achieve when creating an image, I will choose one over the other. Typically, during any given session, I may switch out my lenses for different looks. Each one has its purpose, its strengths, and limitations.

I have two lenses that I tend to favor for pictures of newborn babies. The lens I use the most is a 50mm 1.4. It is a great lens for newborns because it is wide enough that I don’t have to stand too far back from the baby to get the angles and composition I am after. Safety when working with newborns is always top priority, so I wouldn’t want to use a much bigger lens for portraits of newborns unless I am using a spotter to stay close by the baby.  I love it’s ability to shoot at 1.4 for those times when I want more shallow depth of field.

My second “must have” for newborn portraits is my 100mm 2.8 macro lens. I absolutely love this lens for just about everything I do! It almost never leaves my camera bag (you know, except for when I am putting it on my camera body! If it isn’t on the body though, it is in my bag ready and waiting for its shining moment!). It is a must have for getting those close up shots of a newborns sweet little features, such as lips, fingers, toes, hair swirls, etc.

There are definitely other lenses that are also great for pictures of newborns, but I have found these to be my current “go-tos.” Someday I may switch things up, either as I reignite a love for another lens, or if I decide to invest in a new lens, but for now, it is the 100mm 2.8 macro and the 50mm 1.4 all the way!
