Newborn Photography Props: Tips From A Professional Delaware Baby Photographer

Are you expecting a new baby? If you are planning to have your baby’s portraits made, you may be scouring pinterest for ideas for newborn photography props. I don’t mind including props that parents bring to their newborn’s session. I do my best to work them in, especially if they are meaningful to the family. However, before you click “buy”, you may want to discuss with your photographer what their thoughts are, and see if they have any tips on where to purchase.

Often, us professional newborn photographers have a stash of props that they love that fits within their artistic style and brand, which they give clients access to when they have booked a session. We also spend a lot of time in the photography world, and know what the trends are. We can give you great advice on what types of props and styles are “in” and what is “out”. We also know the best newborn prop vendors, and if we don’t have what you are looking for, we can help you find it.

Personally, I think less is more. I try not to give into trends too much. snuggled up newborn sleeping
I prefer a more simplistic style, and only include a minimal amount of props, if any, in a session. I like to keep the focus on the baby, and keep my images clean– giving them a more classic and timeless feel. Any props I do provide, are usually from high-end professional photography prop vendors, and I only purchase them if I feel that they will compliment a newborn in a beautiful, classy manner, and not distract from the image. This also includes outfits, headbands, hats, bonnets, and tiebacks! If the headpiece is almost as big as the baby’s head, it is a big fat  “NO” in my book! I like small and dainty!

This is just my opinion, and each client and each photographer may differ. I respect this, and, as mentioned, will do my best to make sure I use it if it is something the client loves and wants to include in the session.  If you don’t have any props yet, but have an idea, speak with your photographer, as they may have some valuable resources, ideas, and opinions that they can share!
